About
Right upfront, I just need to say, I LOVE CARTOONS! It may seem a little redundant, an animator saying they love cartoons, but I have not always been an animator. Once upon a time I was a theatre designer, loitering in the back of rehearsal rooms.
It was a really exciting time. Working as part of a creative team has always been what I have searched for in my career. Collaborating with artists from other disciplines in a creative pursuit is a reward like no other.
My drawing skills have always been one of the strengths I have bought to a team, so I carved a path towards pre-production work as an illustrator, concept artist and character designer. It is during this time that I started to find myself working in and around the animation industry.
I was first approached by The Nacelle Company to create the opening title sequence for Behind The Attraction after successfully pitching my storyboards to Disney+.
I loved the work so much that I invested what time and money I could to find more work and training in animation. Any small gig or online course that would get me closer to becoming an animator. A REAL animator.
I started with an online course with Don Bluth University in 2D traditional animation. It’s not a real university, but Don Bluth would meet with us once a week to review our assignments and teach us tradition techniques. Pencil and Paper Only. This was invaluable and a great start, but I quickly realised that the animation industry required me to have a few more… contemporary skills.
I dipped my toe into Toon Boom with a few online courses in rigging and paperless. This gave me motivation to make the big leap to 2D Character Animation full time at VanArts in Canada.
I believe my time at VanArts and my previous work experience and study has given me an excellent foundation to build upon as set out on my next adventure to leverage my skills in the animation industry.
